This month’s unproduced scripts follows on from last month’s. Channel 4 executives, unlike everyone else who read the first script and saw the taster tape, couldn’t work out what future episodes would be like. So they asked me to write an episode later in the series to show them how things would go.

This is my proposed episode 3 involving sex robots (of course). In episode 2 Yvonne would have explored the fact that Ewan and her are together in another universe, and this would take that idea a bit further. Reading it now, it feels more like episode five or beyond, but the point was to show how an episode could fit into the series arc.

The script is too long and a bit confused, though I just remember one exec telling me that the references were a bit naff and dated (which was the point of the Russ Abbott stuff and none of that stuff was the comedy for me anyway) and the other one saying she didn’t think Yvonne was engaging enough a character and could we do future episodes involving someone else. Then when I told them they didn’t understand the idea the meeting stood up and we ended up in the corridor and it was over, along it seems with my script writing for TV career (though I did write one episode of Breeders, but that was also a disaster for me).

I don’t really like having to write too much up front - I’d rather find the ideas as I go along and once I am working with the actors - so this was really a bit of a vomit draft (that I worked up over three drafts) to show possibilities. It doesn’t work as one ep as too much is going on and it’s more like a TV hour than 30 mins. Plus it looks like it would be expensive to make.

Hopefully there are enough good ideas in here for you to enjoy reading it and you’ll be able to follow what’s going on. If so, you are better than the execs who rejected it. I might have rejected it based on this script too, but not if I’d seen the first one too.

Anyway, that’s it for EHFNR. My wife pointed out that the first scene is a bit too Rick and Morty and maybe by this stage I was being influenced by that show, even though I started this project before I was really into R and M.

Also some of this stuff comes from the AIOTM sketch about sex robots, which you can watch on youtube.

Here’s episode 1

Anyway, sad that this sitcom never made it. I think we could have had a lot of fun with it. But everything happens for no reason.
