Five suffers from the same problems as Three (McClane is unkillable), but I found it quite an entertainingly stupid film, and think it's worth watching once.
We have started it. It’s even more unlike a Die Hard film though admire them for using subtitles and real Russian, though subsequently have little idea what’s going on!
Yeah, that sounds about right - think I needed a combination of a second (or third) watch and the Plot section of the wiki page before I understood it.
According to the wiki and dimly remembered banter from Jon Rain's excellent Smershpod, you're right, Die Hard 3 was originally an unrelated project called Simon Says. Then it was rewritten as a Lethal Weapon film before it finally became the Willis vehicle. No wonder it lacks charm. Does this happen often? Yes, Speed 2 was originally written as Die Hard 3! Come on, Hollywood.

A great Christmas film!
A great shame that Bruce Willis is suffering from such a severe health problem.

I was talking about 4.0, but yes they both smack of shoe-horning Mcclain into something else and missing the point of what made the original good.
